Something I’ve learned about third wave coffee shops in NYC is that they are typically very small, meaning space is going to be limited. As someone who prefers to sit-and-sip, rather than buy-and-dash, I’ve since grown accustomed to arriving early in the morning.

So on a bright yet cold Sunday morning, I walked down to Nolita at around 8am to visit Happy Bones, an ethically-minded NYC coffee shop on Broome Street.

Created by New Zealanders, the shop sources its beans from Counter Culture Coffee, a company that works directly with farmers to trade at fair prices. The founders are big fans of sustainability and recycling, and to top it off, a portion of their proceeds are donated to Free Arts NYC, a foundation supporting children’s arts.

You’ll find local art on the shop walls and beautifully published art magazines on the shelves in this minimally designed space.

I brought one of my old books from college, “The Architecture of the Eighteenth Century,” and sat down to enjoy my ritual latte.
