It had been around two years since I spent a good amount of time in Paris, so this spring I decided to book an apartment to stay in the French capital for six weeks over summer. After relaxing in the south of France for 2 weeks, it was off to Bretagne before settling into my new home in the 10th arrondissement of Paris in August.

Wondering what to expect during summer in Paris? While some people say that Paris is magical any time of the year, practically speaking, you’ll want to avoid Paris in August consciously – the month when nearly all Parisians vacate the city en route to a more tropical destination. June and July are wonderful times to visit Paris!

Nevertheless, there are plenty of things to do in Paris in summer to keep you occupied!

1. Visit the Louvre at Night

The Louvre extends its hours on Wednesday and Friday evenings, offering a quieter, more intimate experience. August’s warm evenings make it perfect for exploring the museum’s vast collection, from the Mona Lisa to ancient sculptures, with fewer crowds.

2. Stroll Along the Seine

Take a leisurely walk along the Seine River, especially during the Paris Plages event, when the riverbanks transform into pop-up beaches with sand, deckchairs, and activities. The summer vibe is perfect for people-watching or a romantic evening.

3. Attend an Open-Air Cinema at Parc de la Villette

The open-air cinema festival at Parc de la Villette runs in August, screening classic and contemporary films under the stars. Bring a blanket, some snacks, and enjoy movies in a festive, communal atmosphere.

4. Explore Montmartre and Sacré-Cœur

Wander through the charming, less crowded streets of Montmartre in August. Climb up to the Sacré-Cœur Basilica for panoramic views of Paris, and enjoy the bohemian vibe with street artists and cozy cafés.

5. Picnic in Luxembourg Gardens

August’s mild weather is ideal for a picnic in the beautifully manicured Luxembourg Gardens. Pack some baguettes, cheese, and wine, and relax by the fountains or under the shade of chestnut trees.

6. Enjoy a Seine River Cruise

A boat cruise along the Seine offers stunning views of Parisian landmarks like Notre-Dame, Eiffel Tower, and Pont Alexandre III. Evening cruises in August are especially magical with the city lit up against the summer sky.

7. Visit Versailles and Its Gardens

Take a day trip to the Palace of Versailles, where the gardens are in full bloom during August. Catch the Musical Fountains Show, where water features sync to classical music, adding a spectacular touch to your visit.

8. Experience a Summer Festival

August hosts festivals like Rock en Seine, a major music event at Domaine de Saint-Cloud, featuring international and local artists. It’s a great way to soak up Paris’s vibrant cultural scene in a lively outdoor setting.

9. Dine at a Rooftop Restaurant

Paris’s rooftop restaurants, like Le Perchoir or Terrass’’ Hotel, are perfect in August for al fresco dining with views of the city skyline. Savor French cuisine while enjoying the warm summer breeze.

10. Browse the Marché aux Puces

Explore the sprawling flea market at Saint-Ouen, one of the largest in the world. August’s quieter vibe means fewer tourists, making it easier to hunt for unique antiques, vintage clothes, or quirky souvenirs.
