SNCF Dog Policy
Dogs are allowed on SNCF trains in France, but there are certain conditions and rules:
Small pets: Dogs, cats, and other pets weighing under 6kg must be transported in a bag or basket that does not exceed the maximum dimensions of 45cm x 30cm x 25cm. The cost for small pets is usually a fixed fee, around 7 euros.
Larger dogs: Dogs over 6kg are allowed but must be kept on a leash and muzzled. They generally pay half the 2nd-class fare, even if you’re traveling in 1st class. Guide dogs for the blind or visually impaired can travel for free and do not have to be muzzled.
Maximum number of pets: Each passenger can travel with up to two pets.
How to Buy an SNCF Train Ticket for Your Dog
Visit the SNCF Website or App: The first step is to head over to the SNCF website or their official mobile app.
Select Your Journey: Input your departure station, destination, date, and time as you usually would when booking a ticket for yourself.
Add Your Pet: Once you’ve selected the train you’d like to take, you should see an option to add a pet to your booking. Here, you’ll have to specify the size of your dog:
For dogs under 6kg: Choose the ‘Small Dogs and Pets’ option.
For dogs over 6kg: Choose the ‘Large Dogs’ option.
Pay for Your Tickets: After adding your pet to the booking, proceed to checkout. Note that there will be an additional fee for your dog, which will be added to your total. Small pets generally have a fixed fare (~7€), while large dogs pay half of the 2nd-class fare, regardless of the class you’re traveling in.
Confirm Your Booking: Review all details of your journey and then confirm your booking. You should receive an email with your tickets, which you can either print out or show on your smartphone during your journey.ƒ
Dog Necessities for Train Travel in France
What do I need to travel with my dog by train in France?
Train Tickets: As discussed earlier, you’ll need to purchase a ticket for your dog. The price will depend on the size of the dog.
A Carrier or Leash and Muzzle: Dogs under 6kg should be kept in a carrier that does not exceed 45cm x 30cm x 25cm in size. Dogs over 6kg must be on a leash and muzzled throughout the journey.
European Pet Passport: This document records the dog’s vaccination history, particularly against rabies. It is required for travel within the European Union. The passport should also contain details about the dog’s identity and the owner’s contact information.
Microchip: In the European Union, it’s a requirement for dogs to be microchipped. The microchip number should match the one documented in the European Pet Passport.
Health Check: It’s always recommended to get your dog checked by a vet before traveling to ensure that they’re in good health and fit to travel.
Necessary Supplies: Bring any necessary supplies for the journey, such as food, water, a blanket, and a pet waste bag. Travel can be stressful for animals, so having familiar items can help make the journey more comfortable for them.
Does the Eurostar to London Allow Dogs?
Eurostar does not allow passengers to travel with pets, with the exception of registered guide and assistance dogs. Guide and assistance dogs are allowed on Eurostar trains provided they are registered with the Assistance Dogs (UK) or an equivalent organization in the country of your residence.
For other animals, including pets, Eurostar recommends using a registered pet travel company to arrange transport in the train’s cargo area. Eurostar partners with a service called Eurotunnel Le Shuttle for these types of requests, which can transport dogs between the UK and mainland Europe in your own vehicle.
