During my trip to Port de Soller, I decided to take the old tramway to the inland town of Soller in Mallorca, Spain. This old Spanish town had so much charm to offer.
A Quick History of Soller
Soller is a picturesque town located on the northwest coast of Mallorca, one of the Balearic Islands of Spain. The Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans all left their mark on Mallorca, but specific records about Soller during these times are scarce.
Like much of Spain, Mallorca was conquered by the Moors in the 10th century. They introduced advanced agricultural techniques and irrigation systems to the island, which greatly benefited areas like Soller, known for its fertile soil and citrus groves.
In 1229, King James I of Aragon, also known as James the Conqueror, captured Mallorca from the Moors, bringing the island under Christian rule. Soller became part of the Kingdom of Mallorca, and its economy continued to thrive, with agriculture, particularly citrus cultivation, playing a significant role.
Throughout the Middle Ages, Soller was fortified to defend against pirate attacks, with watchtowers and defensive walls constructed.
In the 19th century, Soller’s economy grew with the introduction of the orange trade. The town became known for its sweet oranges and was dubbed the “Valley of Gold.” The construction of the Soller Railway in the early 20th century further facilitated trade and tourism in the region, connecting Soller to the capital city of Palma.
Soller still retains its traditional charm, with its narrow streets, historic buildings, and stunning natural surroundings attracting international visitors. The town’s economy continues to be supported by agriculture, tourism, and services.
